BELLE PLAINE SCHOOL - DRY PRAIRIE RESTORATION
This site features a high-quality dry prairie remnant on a south-facing slope. Great River Greening (GRG) is working with Friends of the Minnesota Valley, Belle Plaine Elementary School (the landowner) and the city of Belle Plaine to restore and manage this site with help from teachers, students and community volunteers. In 2000, volunteers collected prairie seed and, with our crew, removed exotic trees and shrubs that were shading the prairie. During 2001, our crew conducted a prescribed burn and students broadcast the collected seed onto the site. GRG has written a management plan to guide the site's long-term restoration.
Funded in part by the
Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, as recommended by the
Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources.
