BLOOMINGTON BLUFFS - RESTORATION OF DRY PRAIRIE AND OAK WOODLAND
GRG is working with Friends of the Minnesota Valley and several residential landowners to manage dry prairie and oak woodland remnants found along Minnesota River bluffs near the mouth of Nine Mile Creek and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. These important natural habitats found on private land in the city of Bloomington contribute to the ecological diversity of the river valley. In 2001, landowners and neighborhood volunteers removed buckthorn and planted native shrubs and plugs of prairie forbs and grasses. GRG staff also removed other undesirable tree species, conducted a controlled burn to reinvigorate the fire-dependent prairie habitats and seeded with native prairie grasses and wildflowers. The city of Bloomington, Hennepin Conservation District and the DNR Neighborhood Wilds program have also contributed to this project.
