MINNEHAHA PARK - MESIC PRAIRIE AND OAK SAVANNAH RESTORATION
GRG partnered with the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board and community volunteers to remove non-native trees and shrubs that were invading a remnant prairie in the southern end of the park. In the summer of 2000, GRG staff, volunteers and city workers put the woody debris to use by chipping it and then placing it on trails that were eroding and degrading the adjoining forest. In fall 2001, the GRG field crew interseeded the remnant prairie with 15 flower species and introduced nine native grass species in adjacent areas recently cleared of buckthorn.
Funded in part by the
Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, as recommended by the
Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources.
