KATHARINE ORDWAY NATURAL HISTORY STUDY AREA - MANAGEMENT PLAN
Part of the 1,300-acre Pine Bend Bluffs Natural Area on the Mississippi River bluffs, the Katharine Ordway Natural History Study Area is the location of Macalester College's field research station. Dry oak forest dominates the site, along with floodplain forest and a small prairie remnant. Four rare plant species have been documented at the site, but exotic species invasions and lack of fire threaten the natural communities. A comprehensive management plan for preserving and maintaining this high-quality natural area was conducted by Friends of the Mississippi River in 2001 with assistance from GRG and will be implemented by Macalester staff and students.
Funded in part by the
Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, as recommended by the
Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources.
