Stoke the fire of environmental restoration
We’re hosting a winter brush pile burning event, where invasive buckthorn is the fuel.
Join us in the snow! Volunteers will be hauling, stacking and burning pre-cut buckthorn. We’ll serve the cocoa. You are welcome to bring hotdogs, marshmallows, and roasting sticks!
Buckthorn’s impenetrable vegetation keeps sun and water from reaching the ferns, wildflowers, grasses and tree seedlings that grow below, and are so important for nourishing wildlife.
Allemansrätt Wilderness Park is a 125-acre city park that is home to high quality oak forest, wetlands, lakeshore, diverse wildlife, unique glacial geology, and several miles of trails. This past fall, volunteers planted Bur Oak trees to reforest an old hay field. The planting also kicked off a study by Great River Greening and the University of Minnesota to explore how Bur Oaks from three Midwest regions grow in today’s Twin Cities climate. Results from this study will inform our future oak restorations so that they are adapted to future weather patterns.
