The Program Manager joins a team of Program Managers working out of the Saint Paul office who execute and manage individual projects, and collaborate on larger program initiatives. The positions primary geographic focus will be on building up Great River Greening’s Southern Minnesota Program area. The successful candidate has expertise in habitat restoration and promoting rural land and water conservation practices.

Great River Greening’s mission is to inspire, engage, and lead local communities in conserving and caring for the land and water that enrich our lives. We began nearly 25 years ago as a planting project along the Mississippi River in St. Paul, and have since grown into a statewide leader for environmental restoration and community-based stewardship.
Our team of ecologists brings over 50 years of combined experience managing native habitats, implementing practices that preserve clean water, fundraising for habitat and watershed planning and implementation, and engaging 43,000+ volunteers in stewardship efforts. We specialize in on-the-ground habitat restoration and water quality management, complementing the advocacy and acquisition efforts of our environmental nonprofit partners. We work in collaboration at a grassroots level so partners, landowners and volunteers feel connected to an area, understand the power of working together, and are protective of the legacy that we pass on to future generations.
Great River Greening is in the midst of an ambitious growth plan in response to increasing environmental concerns. Overall goals include: a) expanded water quality efforts in agricultural communities, including the Mississippi Headwaters and south-central Minnesota; b) restoring more than 4,000 acres of degraded land in the Twin Cities; and c) increasing diversity at all levels of our organization, including our board of directors, staff, volunteer supervisors, and volunteers to become more inclusive and better reflect the communities we serve.

Program Managers report to the Director of Operations and work in close association with the Program Development Team, i.e. other Program and Project Managers.
In the Southern Region, Great River Greening is working to improve water quality by addressing agricultural and urban runoff in critical tributaries, targeted by pollution load and drinking water and wellhead protection. We do this through collaborative work with producers, local government, civic/community groups, producer interest groups, businesses, and universities.
Future efforts in this area include: a) an exploratory alternative cropping initiative in Seven Mile Creek and/or Roger’s Creek; b) advanced water quality monitoring in Seven Mile Creek with Gustavus Adolphus; c) ground water/source water protection in agricultural communities in the Middle and Lower Minnesota River Basin (municipalities TBD); and d) an expansion into the Cannon River Watershed to conserve soil and water resources through increased best management practices.
The Program Manager joins a team of other Program Managers, each of whom executes and manages individual projects, as well as collaborates on larger program initiatives. While many backgrounds are possible, we would prefer someone who has, in addition to habitat restoration, experience in working lands practices and/or agricultural landowners to promote rural land and water conservation practices. The Program Manager leads initiatives and partnerships within their region/specialty as well as working as a team to advance restoration and habitat (land and water) preservation within Great River Greening’s strategic areas.
Program Development and Planning (40%)
- Develop new and maintain existing programs in line with Great River Greening’s mission, adopted strategic plan, and yearly conservation work plan. Current region would include Southwest MN (Minnesota River Valley including Southwest Metro) as well as working collaboratively with other Program Managers where cross discipline knowledge is needed.
- Develop, lead, and nurture effective partnerships with government agencies, businesses, industry groups, individuals, and others that further Great River Greening’s conservation goals.
- Procure funding and other resources for the implementation of conservation programs and projects through grant writing and partner coordination.
- Participate as a team member in strategic planning for future strategic plans.
- Work with the Program Development Team to evaluate progress towards strategic goals.
- Serve as a representative for the organization, expanding Great River Greening’s network of partners, supporters, and volunteers and participating in various meetings of common interest.
Coordinate and Oversee Program and Project Management (60%)
- Review and draft contractual agreements with funding sources, partners, and contractors.
- Ensure organizational compliance in project implementation, expenditures, contracting and data/information management with grant agreements.
- Participate in evaluation of programs, projects and conservation strategies and procedures.
- Supervise direct report: GRG Watershed Coordinator in St. Peter.
- At least five years of natural resources or related field experience, including two years of program leadership and management.
- Advanced degree in natural resources or a related field.
- Solid understanding of watershed management, and regional land use and its effect on water quality and natural resources.
- Familiarity and experience with state and federal natural resource, agricultural and watershed conservation programs, funding mechanisms and practices, from traditional government-based programs to emerging ideas on farmer-led and market-based solutions.
- Strong business skills, including project and grant management, budget development and management.
- Self-starter and big thinker with excellent verbal, social, and writing skills.
- Superb grant writing skills; proven history of securing and managing grants to successful completion.
- Proven history of envisioning, developing, and implementing innovative conservation strategies to tackle conservation challenges.
- Demonstrated ability and demeanor to forge and maintain effective partnerships with traditional and non-traditional partners to advance the conservation of natural resources in Minnesota.
- Experience with and enthusiasm for engaging the community in conservation.
- A valid driver’s license for required travel.
- Computer experience with Microsoft office suite, ARC Map and internet utilities.
- Working knowledge of Minnesota conservation organizations and government agencies.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing conservation projects with landowners or other partners, delivering high quality results on time and within budget.
- Experience with data management systems.
- Experience as an educator or presenter.
Full-time (40 hours per week), exempt. Salary range is $55,000 to $70,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position has full benefits, including paid vacation, health, dental, 401k, LTD and life insurance.
