Let’s Talk Kernza®

We work with farmers who are early adopters in growing intermediate wheatgrass, a perennial crop called Kernza.

Kernza is the first perennial grain crop in the world, meaning the farmers don’t have to replant it every year. The grain is like wheat and can be used in baked goods, cereal, and beer. Because it is a perennial crop, its roots stay in the ground for multiple years and retain more water and nutrients, thus improving water quality and reducing water volume downstream.

The supply chain and market is still developing for Kernza, and Great River Greening is working with groups like Perennial Promise Growers and Sustain-A-Grain to continue to find cleaning and milling operations interested in processing. On the supplier/distributor side we are working with organizations such as 40 -Century Grain and SturdiWheat and as well as local breweries to promote baking and brewing with Kernza.

We’re proud to support farmers and build the partnerships needed to scale Kernza across Minnesota and beyond.
