Our History

Great River Greening inspires, engages and leads local communities in conserving and caring for the land and water that enrich our lives.

We create resilient landscapes, address biodiversity loss, and sequester and store carbon through community-based stewardship.

Our work began in 1995 with a massive volunteer tree planting project in Saint Paul along the riverfront and West Side Flats. We have since engaged our communities in the restoration of approximately 45,000 acres at nearly 400 sites throughout Minnesota.

Our Expertise

Great River Greening’s team has expertise in ecosystem management, environmental stewardship, and community-building. To achieve our vision of healthy, climate change resilient ecosystems throughout Minnesota, we center our work on projects that will build and preserve healthy, adaptive habitats that can withstand the effects of climate change.

Our Stewardship

Great River Greening nurtures environmental stewardship in all of our work, restoring land, water and wonder in the context of community.

Conserving healthy, climate change resilient ecosystems throughout Minnesota requires a committed, knowledgeable population that is empowered to care for our shared natural systems. We partner with the communities we serve to increase environmental connection, teach environmental restoration, and implement a variety of nature-based climate solutions.

Our Funding

In addition to individual, corporate, and foundation gifts, Great River Greening’s work is supported by the Outdoor Heritage Fund and the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund.

These important partnerships fund our work throughout Minnesota.
